Access to quality state-of-the-art facilities and technical resources is severely limited, and significant changes in academic medicine over the past few years have profoundly affected the ability of the University of Washington School of Medicine to carry out its research, training and patient care efforts. Among these changes, the increased competition and demand for federal research dollars is particularly significant. So too is the trend toward managed care, which has seriously constrained our faculty’s ability to balance their clinical care and research responsbilities.
