In addition to the innovative research going on at UW Medicine and at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Seattle Cancer
Care Alliance has recently started the GI Cancer Prevention Program, a clinic for people, who by their family history, have an increased
risk of developing gastrointestinal cancer. The clinic is a multi-disciplinary clinic for people known to be at high risk for colorectal,
gastric and pancreatic cancer.
“An example of someone at high risk would be a person who has a family member who has been diganosed with one of these cancers at an
early age,” says Dr. Grady, the Medical Director of the GI Cancer Prevention Program. “We will provide a risk assessment for that
individual and their family members, including genetic testing and counseling for known hereditary cancer syndromes. Based on the
results of the risk assessment, patients will receive individualized cancer surveillance recommendations and will be offered
opportunities to participate in clinical trials aimed at cancer prevention and detection.”
Program health-care providers include gastroenterologists, geneticists, genetic counselors, gynecological oncologists, and nutritionists.
