Dr. Yu, a gastroenterologist with training in Advanced Transplant Hepatology, joined the GI Division faculty in July. Dr. Yu
obtained his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He earned his Master of
Science degree in Epidemiology at the University of Washington, where he also completed his Internal Medicine residency, Gastroenterology
fellowship and Advanced Transplant Hepatology fellowship. His degree in Epidemiology will allow him to perform high-quality, well-designed
clinical research. In addition, his interest in nutrition will allow him to study a relatively unexplored aspect of liver disease. We are
delighted to have Dr. Yu as part of our Liver Care Line team.

A Conversation with Dr. Yu
It is relevant to everyone, including my own family members and myself. Life, health, illness and death are interesting and practical subject matters.
I was very impressed, as a resident, by how ill patients with liver diseases can present, and how many different organ systems can be affected.
I probably enjoy the team work the most, with all the different disciplines involved. It is also very good to have time to read.
I am interested in studying modifiable risk factors in chronic liver disease progression, especially the role of diet and nutrition in patients
with viral and metabolic liver diseases. An example of such exploration would be to study the effect of weight loss and dietary modification
among hepatitis C patients who could not be cured by standard therapy. I am also interested in learning more about the immunogenic effect of food components,
with celiac sprue as the classic example.
The program set up by Drs. Carithers and Perkins have many nice infrastructures for clinical research. The balance between clinical duties, teaching
and research is good. The people are very nice and dedicated.
I like walking around the city and going to my wife's p-patch at Squire Park. It's technically mine as well.
It's been a long time.
