Over the past few years, significant changes in academic medicine have profoundly impacted the ability of the University of Washington School of Medicine to carry out its research, training, and patient care programs. Among these changes, the increased competition and demand for federal research dollars is particularly significant. So too is the trend toward managed care, which has seriously constrained our faculty's ability to balance their clinical care and research responsibilities.
