The University of Washington offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Transplant Hepatology. Candidates must have completed Gastroenterology fellowship training in an ACGME-accredited program and be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Gastroenterology. The program offers Transplant Hepatology training through the University of Washington System, including clinical experience at the University of Washington Medical Center, site of an active Liver Transplant Program, as well as at the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle Division. A multidisciplinary approach, with input from hepatic pathologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, transplant surgeons, and interventional radiologists, ensures a broad-based clinical experience. The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program includes participation in clinical research.

The faculty of the Division of Gastroenterology is committed to the training of physicians in the specialty field of Transplant Hepatology. This commitment encompasses education of medical students, residents, fellows, and fully trained physicians in practice. Our curriculum covers transplant hepatology fellowship, that period of training which follows fellowship in gastroenterology. The transplant hepatology fellowship curriculum covers the following five basic skills that are to be mastered by trainees:

1. Knowledge base of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and pharmacology that is relevant to the specialty;
2. Clinical care of hospitalized patients with disease;
3. Technical aspects of transplant hepatology practice; including liver biopsies;
4. Ambulatory care skills (including disease prevention and screening); and
5. Ancillary skills geared to each trainee’s career plans.

All trainees will be encouraged to participate in clinical research training to understand the process of generating new knowledge in Medicine. Trainees will work with one or more mentor(s) through their 1 year program to achieve a good grasp of addressing clinically relevant questions with scientific rigor, and have first-hand experience in analyzing and presenting scientific data. Specialized areas of training embedded within the fellowship include:

• Liver Pathology – where trainees will learn the techniques of preparing tissue sections, special histochemical and immunocytochemical staining methods, as well as interpretation of morphological structures in various disease states.
• Specialized Clinics - where patients presenting with a defined disorders are cared for by a focused and concentrated effort and expertise. These training scenarios afford unique opportunities to benefit the trainees in the following areas: Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, and Liver Tumor Clinic.

Physicians who enter fellowship already have substantial knowledge in most of these areas that serves as a base for further learning. Our curriculum is largely based upon the ACGME Program Requirements for Fellowship Education in Transplant Hepatology.

In order to be considered for the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship training program at the University of Washington, candidates must have completed Gastroenterology fellowship training in an ACGME-accredited program and be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Gastroenterology.

We have one Transplant Hepatology Fellowship position available starting July 2012. For the application process, please submit the following items:

• Application Form or a Curriculum Vitae which contains the same information as the application form
• A 1-2 page essay that discusses your ultimate professional objectives
• Reference Letters:
  1. A letter from your Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director
  2. A letter from 2 other references
  3. (note, we need to receive your letters of reference directly. We cannot accept photocopies of these items sent by you unless there are extenuating circumstances. Please explain your circumstances in a written format.)

Mail or email your application form/CV plus your essay and request that the letters of reference be sent on your behalf to the contact listed below. Once your application is received, it will be sent to the faculty for review. After the faculty has reviewed your completed file, you will receive a letter from us giving you the results of the review process.
